Every once in a while, it’s nice to be reminded that good things are happening in the world. No, wait, scratch that–it’s ALWAYS the right time to hear about good things, which is why we bring you a story today of toxic industrial waste being transformed into a 100% non-hazardous material, safe to be reused for another purpose.

Engineers at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Indiana discovered that the wastewater sludge produced by their processes could be treated using a natural compound in such a way to make it completely reusable. This change has saved more than a million pounds of waste from being produced every year that would have gone to a landfill. So now Toyota has an environmentally-friendly practice that can be used at any of their facilities, or possibly even greater applications. Neat, isn’t it? You can watch a short, two-minute video to learn more about it.

Turning wastewater into productive material is one of several awesome projects Toyota accomplished this year for the Earth, which you can read more about it in their 2013 North American Environmental Report. Other initiatives include building green dealerships that are certified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, working to preserve the Galapagos Islands, teaming up with Alabama A&M University on ways to use biofuels, and more.
